Helping Out Bats (And Getting Rid of Pesky Mosquitoes)

A warm Indian summer breeze, sun setting on the horizon (maybe a glass of chilled white wine, a loved one sitting next to you…) and ZAP, you’re bitten by a mosquito! Next thing you know, your looking for that can of toxic bug spray to get those little flying vampire insects.

There has got to be a better way…

Consider the lowly, maligned bat. Bats can eat up to 1,200 mosquitoes in an hour and often consume their body weight in insects every night, helping keep bug populations in check. Sounds great, right?

Here is a story about a town that embraces bats…

Back in the early 1980’s the Congress Avenue Bridge was reconstructed in Austin, Texas. Little did the engineers know that they’d created a perfect bat roost. Now every night during the summer hundreds of people come to view the largest urban bat colony emerge from under the bridge.

Often thought to be dirty and dangerous, bats are not. They are gentle, sophisticated and the Austin bats eat anywhere from 10,000 to 20,000 POUNDs of insects (including agricultural pests and mosquitoes!).

The Austin bats have become one of Austin’s most viewed tourist attractions. Unusual and fascinating, 1.5 million bats spiral the summer skies (they fly south for the winter).

Austin, we have a problem…

More than half of the bat species in the United States are in severe decline or listed as endangered. Loss of habitat is a big contributor in this equation.
